Ron Paul ran as a very conservative/libertarian Republican. Many say you are running on the same platform. Is this true? How are you and Ron Paul similar?
Ron Paul ran as a very conservative/libertarian Republican. Many say you are running on the same platform. Is this true? How are you and Ron Paul similar?
______________________
Ron Paul and I are running on similar platforms of traditional Republican values of limited government, fiscal responsibility and personal freedoms. Many of the problems we have in America today are because the Democrats and some Republicans are steering us away from the principles that made this country great. I am a true believer in free markets and understand first hand how the red tape of the government has unintended consequences. I also understand how wasteful spending is weakening our economy and must be stopped immediately.
What is your opinion on energy independence?
________________________________
Energy independence is extremely important for our national security. The United States relies too heavily on foreign sources of energy. We need to address the deficiency in a number of ways. First we have to be realistic and not allow our neighbors such as Cuba to slant drill into our oil and natural gas reserves. Instead we should be obtaining that energy for ourselves. As far as drilling for oil in ANWR, we must consider it a viable option given we can protect the pipelines through Canada, which to date has not been a problem but will attract a lot of terrorist attention. Finally we need to accept nuclear as part of the energy equation. America has ignored nuclear for far too long and granting permits for nuclear power plants and allowing it to compete on a free market of energy sources is critical to the United States’ energy independence.
Do you have a plan for tax reform? Either Fair or Flat tax or something of your own?
________________________________
Nice username! Both the fair tax and the flat tax are better systems than the one we have currently which costs Americans over $2 Billion per year in compliance costs. Although I would not advocate one system over the other right now I would love to move tax day and election day into the same week! Or perhaps return to the days when citizens actually had to pay taxes versus file to get their hard earned money back which was automatically withdrawn.
What is your position on an Amendment to restrict Government Spending?
________________________________
I would not be in favor of a Constitutional Amendment controlling government spending because it would inevitably have an exemption clause for war and our politicians would abuse that clause to continue spending recklessly. That being said, spending is one of the major problems we have and we need to bring about earmark reform and find better ways to prevent special interests from having so much influence over our politicians.
In your opinion, is No Child Left Behind a good program?
______________________________
I am generally not in favor of how No Child Left Behind is being implemented. I understand that if the Federal government gives out money it is reasonable to request metrics for accountability but this is another example of a very well intentioned big government program that is counter-productive to its intended consequences. I would prefer to see more school choice and localized control of the education process. We can achieve these goals with a variety of creative ways to implement school voucher/tax credits and getting the Federal government less involved with education.
The person that should be our nominee, Ron Paul, supports abolishing the fed because they print money and cause inflation that is basically a tax on us… Do you support this measure?
Mr. Singh, what are some of the biggest contrasts between you and your opponent Mark Ellmore?
Also, what makes you a more viable candidate with a better chance to defeat Jim Moran?
________________________________
The biggest difference between myself and Mr. Ellmore is my strong stance on national security. I have worked in the Intelligence Community for over 10 years and have been a part of multiple aspects required to protect our country. Currently I work with Counter-Terrorism efforts and soldiers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan on a daily basis. Understanding the nuances of our defense is critical to crafting smart policies for America that will protect us and not make us more vulnerable.
Another difference between myself and Mr. Ellmore is my belief and understanding of the free market. Unlike Mr. Ellmore, I do not advocate the expansion of Medicare to pay for assisted living homes and realize fair trade does not mean boats entering our ports with merchandise must leave with the same amount of merchandise as he stated at the GMU CR debate.
On immigration I promote a smart and comprehensive policy which includes border security, exit visa program for overstayers of tourist and student visas, going after companies hiring undocumented workers, and a guest worker program that allows immigrant families to remain in their native countries without straining our schools and hospitals. Mr. Ellmore stated he wanted to be able to see across the border in our last debate and not have something that reminded him of the Berlin Wall. And he also is on record from a 2006 debate that he was against a border fence for being “too isolationist”.
I also have the best ability to defeat Moran this November because I am able to reach out to a demographic of young and diverse voters typically not available to the Republican base. I can do this without sacrificing conservative principles and convincing citizens the policies of Moran are hurting us. I also have an excellent staff who is very talented and will make sure I win this election.
How would you address the current situation in Iraq?
________________________________
When it comes to national defense I am the only candidate that understands the complex situations we face around the globe due to a decade of national security experience. I have worked with the Intelligence Community in a number of capacities and work with Counter-Terrorism and soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan on a daily basis helping them with more efficient ways to hunt insurgents.
I am very proud of our military and know that they and General Petraeus are doing a great job. I work with them to address the challenges they face in Iraq and Afghanistan and see what they face on a daily basis. I agree with the General when he tells Congress Iraq requires political reconciliation and economic programs to maintain and build on any military progress we have made.
I believe our politicians have failed to address the issue of the political and economic strength of Iraq. We need leaders in Congress who will put pressure on the Iraqi government to take greater responsibility for their nation by forcing the Iraqi government to spend more of their $25B surplus in their own national development, as Republican Senators Collins and Graham have recently proposed with plans similar to mine.
I believe we will help the Iraqis bring a proper and an honorable end to the conflict, helping them create a free and democratic nation. Since I am not an advocate of bumper sticker politics, I will refer you to the issues page on my website for details: http://www.Amit08.com/foreignPolicy.jsp
In the debate between Mr. Ellmore and yourself, Mr. Ellmore mentioned how he would differ from you on a border fence/wall because of a difference in building materials. What type of materials would you call for?
________________________________
I would not restrict what materials were used for a border wall. We should not sacrifice the security of our country because of aesthetics and the desire to literally look across the border. Depending on the terrain, environment, etc., we should allow the implementers of our border security to make the most effective decisions without
bureaucrats and politicians in Washington dictating what sort of construction materials to use.
My opponent said in 2006 he was against a border fence. He has now flip-flopped and said he is for a border fence but against a border wall. We need consistent and clear leadership when it comes to protecting our nation.
Do you think it is possible to be a good candidate running for two years and only be able to raise 4000 dollars?
I dont, find out more at georgemasoncr.blogspot.com
________________________________
I assume you are referring to my opponents who we outraised 6-to-1 in individual contributions in the first quarter. Not too bad considering we just entered the race in late February versus 18 months ago.
Raising money is one of the most difficult tasks for a candidate but it is necessary to win, especially to challenge a heavily special interest subsidized politician like Jim Moran. I am pleased with our 1Q funding numbers especially since all of it was raised in the last month because we did not formally announce our intentions to run until late February.
Raising over $25,000 in individual contributions was not a simple task and now we must use it wisely to win the June 10th primary. I hope all of you come to support me as the candidate who not only stands for true conservative principles but actually can defeat Moran.
how would you address the transportation problem in nova?
_________________________________
We have a variety of ways to deal with the frustrating transportation problems in NoVA. The obvious answer is extending the metro out to Dulles. We should do this but we should do it correctly.
We need to make sure the extension is a viable commuter option and the current plan calls for 4 stops in Tysons which could be a deterrent for those working in Arlington and DC and live out near Dulles. I would like to see the project rebid with realignment options so Northern Virginians can get the best value for their tax dollars.
We can also encourage much of the high-tech sector to embrace telecommuting and staggered work hours to help alleviate traffic during rush hour.
Can you discuss the remark that Ellmore made about “building materials” for a wall on the Mexican border?
_________________________________
Basically Mr. Ellmore stated using bricks and mortar reminded him of the Berlin Wall and he wanted a fence so we could look to other side. Frankly, I was somewhat shocked to hear his explanation. Given the illegal trafficking of people and drugs across the border, I do not understand how any leader of our nation would restrict our border security for aesthetic reasons.
The person that should be our nominee, Ron Paul, supports abolishing the fed because they print money and cause inflation that is basically a tax on us… Do you support this measure?
________________________________
It is true the Fed Reserve has harmed our economy by devaluing the dollar through inflation. Whether we can abolish the Fed at this time is something I am honestly uncertain of due to the instability of the global economy.
I do support sound fiscal and monetary policies and believe Bernanke is not doing a sufficient job. I am willing to work with Republicans, Democrats, and Independents to help strengthen the US dollar.
